The world’s youth are the real catalysts for innovation and sustainability, which is why Dell EMC in partnership with Egyptian Fab Lab team and Giza Systems Education Foundation, are excited to announce Fab Lab on Wheels. This community-run facility is the perfect foundation to spur digital transformation and innovation, especially in a country such as Egypt, which is brimming with unearthed talent and potential.
Born out of the success of Fab Lab, the Fab Lab on Wheels promises to take innovation and digital transformation out into the rural areas, making it the first of its kind in Egypt. Through this mobile activation, we hope to uncover some groundbreaking projects and talent that will give birth to a new generation of entrepreneurs.
Housed in a bus, the Fab Lab on Wheels will be a fully equipped with state-of-the-art digital fabrication machinery, including laser cutters, 3D printers and computer numerical code (CNC) routers. Additionally it will host some of the best activities and creations that have come out of Fab Lab in Egypt to help inspire and motivate others on its journey.
“Fab Lab on Wheels hopes to grow the maker community and inspire entrepreneurs throughout Egypt to turn their ideas into new products and prototypes. The initiative widens the pool of talents and resources, and promotes networking and information sharing across governorates,” commented Omar El Safty, General Manager at Fab Lab Egypt.
What is Fab Lab?
Fab Lab Egypt is part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s global network since 2012. It is a digital fabrication lab and a community-run public makerspace where anyone can create almost anything, from electronics to furniture and installations. Young children, college students, entrepreneurs and businesses can create and prototype their ideas in our lab. They also have the opportunity to get together to share knowledge, collaborate on projects and participate in other hands-on activities. It is a space where we share our machines, tools, skills, resources and ideas with the community to create new opportunities for economic and social benefits.
Fab Lab on Wheels will be touring various governorates across Egypt, including Minya, Sohag, Beni Suef, Al Faiyum, and Menoufeya. The Fab Lab bus will stay for two months in each governorate at the local Exploratory Centers for Science and Technology, in which the Fab Lab on Wheels team will support the local community through practical workshops, awareness sessions, community events, and even a maker diploma offered by Fab Lab Egypt.
Fab Lab on Wheels will reach out to people from all walks of life to provide them with a hands-on learning environment. From engineering students and robotics enthusiasts, to handcraft makers and workshop owners, visitors will be able to access the technology and fabrication machines to innovate and create.
“Working with students and local talents, who represent the next generation, helps us identify challenges and deliver solutions based on new technologies and innovative business models to achieve our vision of building a better world.” said Mohammed Amin, Senior Vice President and Regional Manager for Turkey, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa Region at Dell EMC.
The launch of Fab Lab on Wheels will take place at the Greek Campus in Downtown Cairo on the 4th of December 2016. For more information on the Fab Lab on Wheels touring route and dates follow us on facebook here!
